Do's & Don'ts
Do:
• Greet with a handshake (right hand), respect elders
• Dress modestly; women especially in rural areas
• Accept tea or coffee when offered
• Ask permission before photographing people, especially women
• Use right hand for eating and passing items
• Learn a few words of Arabic or French
Don’t:
• Display public affection
• Criticize Islam or politics
• Enter mosques if non-Muslim without permission
• Eat/drink in public during Ramadan daylight hours
• Offer or expect alcohol in rural/religious areas
• Assume everyone speaks French; use Arabic greetings
• Take photos of military/police
